"The Thunderstorm CD is something I have considered publishing for over two decades. The circumstances under which it was recorded now outweighs the risks involved; my only regret is that I waited this long to share the therapeutic and inspirational powers it contains."William Rush
The Storm you will hear on this 59min CD arrived ten years ahead of "The Perfect Storm" by Junger Sebastian (Warner Bros. Movie, 2000). Junger's storm hit the New England coast - mine rolled through the heart of Central Texas. His tempest of record took some lives and changed others. My Storm carried a personal warning of impending life-altering change as it rolled through the valley along the Colorado River.
This was no ordinary storm and its low, dark approach was awe inspiring! Yet, inexplicably, as family members began securing the doors and windows at the ranch house - I felt compelled to walk into the twilight with a portable tape recorder and risk the horrific bolts of lightening stabbing in all directions.
The storm moves forward slowly; crickets sing as the first rain drops strike the heavy reel-to-reel recorder (an old but high quality SONY TC-800B/4 Speed with Servocontrol) and at times a raindrop would strike the Condenser Microphone and momentarily mute the recording. Blinding flashes of lightening, like giant strobes, illuminated the dark mountaintops without letup. Our old dog, Pepper, barked and then joined me on the hillside. He was normally afraid of thunder - but he carried his tail high and seemed totally unafraid this night! I opened the back gate just as the storm front crossed the river west of the ranch house. The entire valley looked like daytime with the most spectacular display of lightening and extended rumbling of thunder ever witnessed by lifelong residents of the "Hill Country" before or since that night.
I was reminded of Francis Parkman's description in his famous 1846 Journal "The Oregon Trail" in which he gives us written record of a very similar thunderstorm: "...incessant flashes of lightning, such stunning and continuous thunder I had never known before....seeming to roll around the whole firmament with a peculiar and awful reverberation."
For almost an hour Pepper and I walked in the wind and rain - soaked thoroughly. My western hat protected the microphone from intermittent light hail that can be heard striking vehicle bumpers in the driveway. It was both terrifying and magnificent! Strangely, I had NO FEAR of being struck down and felt encouraged to inhale the rain-fresh air...relishing every second of being ALIVE. But, the storm was a catalyst for a sobering premonition which it either brought or amplified until I heard over and over in my mind: "Enjoy this! Your life is about to change dramatically and forever...but...you will LIVE."
That Storm's warning was so clear and specific that the following night I confided in a local attorney after a business meeting. He, normally jovial to a fault, was shaken by the gravity of my report. I didn't have long to wait before the warning was fulfilled.
On a perfectly clear morning, my vehicle was totally destroyed in a head-on collision with a speeding DWI. I was extracted with the Jaws-Of-Life and transported to a special Private Room which would be my home over the next four months. This happened in mid August.....yet it was not until Thanksgiving Day that I first became 'aware' that I even still existed.
Thus, my life changed forever just as foretold. Today, 26 years and 7 major surgeries later, I remain permanently disabled - though alive as 'promised'. During the long months and years of hospitalizations, recoveries & therapy, friends brought me commercial recordings of nature sounds smothered by music! None worked for me. Thankfully, I had this live recording and it has carried me buoyantly above pain and depression recovery after recovery.
Pepper is long gone, as are some of the muted voices heard in the background at the beginning of the storm. But, Pepper's watchful greeting and the sounds of loved ones live on forever because of this brief window in time; a cameo in time depicting the universal celebration of life.
Nightly I drift off to sleep while this primitive symphony spins on repeat play. It does not stop pain, but the auditory effects in this recording have soothed anxiety and lifted depression with results that exceed the benefits of hypnosis for me. The reverberating thunder settles into a relaxing backdrop to the steady patter of rain. All are comforting effects undiminished in measure by passing time or repetition.
It is finally time to share this recording. It has been digitally remastered with Audio Cleaning Lab and is a pleasure to listen to while falling asleep. Play this CD at home, in your auto, or in a hotel room; listen again and again to "The Storm that arrived to Warn - and remained to Heal."

FELLOW ARTISTS: I am getting very nice Feedback that this CD is providing powerfully productive hours in studios and is a nice break from our often replayed music and streaming audio. In fact, today this original line was delivered by an artist regarding the thunderstorm CD: "I use it as an Audio Sorbet to cleanse my Mind's taste for music." Ha! Clever. And it works exactly that way in my own studio.
CAUTION: According to CDC records, in the U.S. from 1980 thru 1995, there were 1318 Deaths attributed to lightening. 30% of persons struck die - 74% who survive have permanent disabilities. The average lightening strike is 6 miles long, can reach 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit & up to One Billion Volts. Heed National Weather Service watches & warnings. "No place outdoors is safe when thunderstorms are nearby." The price gambled to obtain this recording was far too high. I would NEVER take this risk again and caution everyone to immediately seek the safest possible shelter.

NEW - A 2009 RUSH ARTISTIC PRODUCTION Audio Cd: "LAST REBEL HOME". This Cd presents a never-before-heard Recording from 1916 (by Wax Graphaphone) of an 83 year old Civil War Veteran who was 29 years of age at the start of the war when he joined the 17th Texas Infantry. The location of the rare recording was in Kingsland, Texas on the front porch of the soldier's small home. The toothless old Veteran's gentle account of his four years of hardships, lost friends, and battles is "history well told". His story comes across as SUPERB NARRATION from an "eye witness" to History and is remarkably devoid of boasts or apologies. It has been compared to author Michael Sharra's great work in "Killer Angels". Told in times & terms long before"being PC"began to mute History.
